We arrived McLeodganj at about 10.30am and I and Hiten headed straight to TIPA. We did not want to waste any time of the day and wanted to begin work ASAP.
Sahil & Laju went to find some accommodation.
We could see boards & banners of the Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF) which had ended yesterday evening and we missed it!

Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, was established on 11th of August, 1959, right after coming into exile, with a special guidance from His Holiness The great 14th Dalai Lama, a vision to preserve and promote our rich cultural heritage.
To fulfill that vision the first cabinet ministers officially delegated the responsibility to Kashoe Bhartso Dorje Dhundup, Tsedrung Kalsang Kunga, Shoedrung Chichak Dorjee, Chaknang Dorjee Rigzin, Chaknang Lhawang Tsering and Gelong Lobsang Tenzin to work towards Establishing a Tibetan Dance and Music troupe in the Indian border of Kalimpong. Thus, this would be the first in the series of Tibetan Institute in exile which works towards the revival of the various branches of the traditional Tibetan sciences. It was with a great difficulty that they were able to assemble a group of 26 members, partly because of the prevalence of traditional prejudice within Tibetan society towards the musician and artistes. Most of these members were either sons or daughters of noble and aristocrat families and thus their very presence also helped in downplaying the existing discriminatory attitude.
Since then they have performed not just in India but around the world to promote their art.

When we reached TIPA we could hear students singing and playing musical instruments. These did not look like formal rehearsals. It was really impressive to see an entire generation so passionate about their culture.
Images of TIPA :
A big open ground where they perform & rehearse often |
Some funny replicas of prayer flags hung outside TIPA. Worth zooming in and reading! |

Our modest lunch - Ratlami Sev, Peanuts and Munch! We did not have the time & energy to go find a place to eat. |

Girls rehearsing for the evening folk dance performance. Later we found this was the performance from the Kham region in Tibet. |
